A good friend of mine went back to school after a long career in artificial intelligence. He majored in Bioinformatics at UCSC. He's finishing his dissertation, and now looking for a post-doc position.

If you get the degree, and you are serious, you will need to move to a different part of the country, or to a different country to persue your new field.
