What is ACPI?

ACPI stands for the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.
Everything you want to know about APCI is here.
Specifies standard hardware interfaces.
Specifies standard software interfaces.
Replaces APM.
Separates hardware control from OS policy.

Why do we need ACPI

New hardware requires it.
Older interfaces such as APM BIOS and PCI BIOS will not be supported on new hardware

The ACPI Component Architecture (ACPICA) project provides an operating system (OS)-independent reference implementation of the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Specification (ACPI).

APM.ADD - replaces IBM's APM.SYS
ACPIDAEMON.EXE - Ring3 application support - replaces IBM's APMDAEMN.EXE
TESTCFG2.SYS - replaces IBM's TESTCFG.SYS to correct defects
CONFIG.SYS - customized for ACPI
SNOOP.LST - customized for ACPI
ACPI.CFG - configures ACPI.PSD
